Delightful Devonport Apartment That Will Make You Green with Envy

This lovely garden apartment in the charming village of Devonport was built in the 1980’s.  The owner relocated from Cambridge from where she has many fond memories.  As a designer, I wanted to embrace her continued affection for the area by bringing in a series of greens reminiscent of the rolling hills found there.  This would also allow me to bring the outdoors inside and play off of the natural greenery surrounding the property.

One of the first things that I addressed was the flooring that was high-quality wood but much too dark for what we were thinking.  Some designers would have been inclined to tear it out and choose something new.  I saw that concept as a needless expense.  Instead, I called upon one of my trusted tradespeople to sand and blonde them to make them a much softer shade.  Voila’ – flooring perfection was achieved. We designed and installed a custom kitchen using the template of the old floor so that no additional flooring needed to be sourced.

Next, I added a custom rug in green to create a layer of texture.  The alabaster walls made an ideal space to craft and gallery of the owners beloved art collection.

Since the apartment lacked storage I added custom shelving and cabinets that were a-symmetrical but still balanced.  This became an ideal spot for the television and the sliding panels were a slick way to hideaway items she didn’t want on display.  The L-shaped sofa will allow for lots of company to be comfortable when they visit and the lovely chairs provide even more seating space both locally made in New Zealand and covered in durable fabrics to withstand the wear of small grandchildren.  Finally, I added satin and linen cushions for a finishing touch.  The client was over the moon with the end result and has since recommended me to other friends.
